The Endocannabinoid System

Endocannabinoids are substances that are naturally produced within the human body, and which activate cannabinoid receptors (“CBRs”). These substances are endogenous lipid-based retrograde neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors. The endocannabinoid system (“ECS”) is a biological system composed of these endocannabinoids and cannabinoid receptor proteins that are expressed throughout the vertebrate central nervous system (including the brain) and peripheral nervous system. In short, the ECS is a network of neurotransmitters which our cells use to communicate with each other. This complex system which is found in all human beings is involved in maintaining our health and wellbeing.

The research into the endocannabinoid system is still in its infancy, but it is widely believed that the endocannabinoid system is responsible for regulating physiological and cognitive processes.

The human body produces its own endocannabinoids but can also process the natural endocannabinoids found in CBD to support wellbeing. Like many other bodily functions, sometimes our ECS is not always balanced or working accurately. A healthy and well-maintained endocannabinoid system can help aid bodily wellbeing and homeostasis (i.e. a stable state of chemical and biological balance in the human body).
